I teach two ten-week graphic novel classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art: Visual Storytelling and Cartooning. Visual Storytelling focuses on the narrative aspect of comics; how imagery, text, panel layouts, and other tools can be used most effectively to portray characters and immerse the reader in a story. Cartooning focuses on drawing skills particular to comic creation: creating art that has immediacy and economy, that plays well with text and takes advantage of repeating imagery in panels. My classes are through the Continuing Education department and are open to any high school graduate, and even some high school students with permission. I'll be teaching Cartooning this summer, starting on May 27. I will also be mentoring some independent studies as part of PNCA's Graphic Novel Intensive. For program information, registration, and syllabus downloads, visit PNCA's website. Also, PNCA will present a series of graphic novel workshops on April 27 at the Stumptown Comics Fest. All workshops are free with festival admission. In my workshop, Instant Graphic Novel, the group will invent and execute a complete comic story. For the full schedule, visit Stumptown's homepage. |
